Our Goals

Six pillars of cultural stewardship

Everything we do flows from six commitments — to language, access, creators, heritage, literacy, and the voices that have too often gone unheard.

Light Upon Light Foundation was built around a set of deeply held beliefs about what Arabic culture deserves: visibility, preservation, and the kind of creative renewal that only happens when communities are empowered to tell their own stories. These six goals are not abstract aspirations — they are the framework for every program, partnership, and initiative we pursue.

01

Goal 01

Promote Arabic Culture and Language

Celebrating the richness of Arabic expression in all its forms — classical and contemporary, spoken and written, local and global.

Arabic is one of the world's great languages — a living tradition that spans poetry and prose, sacred text and street art, ancient manuscript and modern podcast. Our programs bring Arabic language and culture to life through literary events, media productions, educational partnerships, and storytelling initiatives that reach audiences of all ages and backgrounds. We believe that every encounter with Arabic culture — however small — is a seed planted for the future.

This includes

  • Literary events and cultural programming
  • Media productions in Arabic
  • Educational partnerships with schools and libraries
  • Storytelling initiatives for all ages

02

Goal 02

Expand Access to Arabic Content

Making Arabic literature, media, and educational resources available to communities worldwide — in digital, audio, and print formats.

Access is equity. Too many children grow up without books in their home language. Too many families in the diaspora struggle to find quality Arabic content for their children. Too many schools lack the resources to teach Arabic literature with depth and joy. We work to close these gaps by supporting the creation, translation, and distribution of Arabic books, audiobooks, digital media, and cultural resources — ensuring that geography, income, or language background is never a barrier to Arabic culture.

This includes

  • Arabic books and audiobooks for children and youth
  • Digital media and online resources
  • Content for schools, libraries, and community centers
  • Multilingual and bilingual resources

03

Goal 03

Support Arab Creators and Publishers

Providing platforms, partnerships, and opportunities for writers, narrators, educators, and media producers to share their work with the world.

Behind every great book is a writer who needed support. Behind every audiobook is a narrator who deserved a platform. Behind every educational program is an educator who needed resources. We invest in Arab creators at every stage of their journey — from emerging writers seeking their first publication opportunity to established publishers looking to reach new audiences. Our support takes many forms: grants, residencies, publishing partnerships, distribution networks, and mentorship programs that connect creators with the communities who need their work.

This includes

  • Grants and fellowships for Arab writers and artists
  • Publishing partnerships and distribution support
  • Mentorship and professional development
  • Platforms for emerging voices

04

Goal 04

Preserve Arabic Heritage Through Digitization and Audio

Archiving and digitizing rare texts, oral traditions, and cultural artifacts so that future generations can access their inheritance.

Heritage is fragile. Manuscripts deteriorate. Oral traditions fade when elders pass. Recordings degrade. We treat the preservation of Arabic cultural heritage as an urgent responsibility — working with libraries, archives, universities, and community organizations to digitize rare texts, record oral histories, and produce audio versions of classical and contemporary works. Our digitization projects make these treasures accessible to researchers, educators, and communities around the world, ensuring that the depth of Arabic civilization is never lost to time.

This includes

  • Digitization of rare manuscripts and texts
  • Recording of oral histories and traditions
  • Audio production of classical and contemporary works
  • Open-access archiving and distribution

05

Goal 05

Strengthen Arabic Literacy for Younger Generations

Developing engaging reading, listening, and learning initiatives that nurture a love of Arabic language from an early age.

Literacy is the foundation of everything. A child who loves to read in Arabic will carry that love for a lifetime. A young person who discovers Arabic poetry, fiction, or history through an engaging program may become the next great Arabic writer, educator, or cultural leader. We develop and support literacy initiatives that meet children and youth where they are — in classrooms, libraries, community centers, and at home — with content that is joyful, culturally resonant, and pedagogically sound. Our programs serve Arabic heritage speakers, second-language learners, and curious newcomers alike.

This includes

  • Children's reading and listening programs
  • School and library curriculum support
  • Arabic language learning resources
  • Youth writing and storytelling workshops

06

Goal 06

Amplify Underrepresented Arab Voices

Centering the stories of refugee, diaspora, and emerging creators — ensuring the full breadth of Arab experience is heard, honored, and shared.

The Arab world is not monolithic. It encompasses dozens of countries, hundreds of dialects, and countless communities shaped by migration, displacement, and diaspora. Some of the most powerful Arabic stories are being written by people who have been forced to leave their homelands, who straddle multiple cultures and languages, who have been overlooked by mainstream publishing and media. We are committed to amplifying these voices — through dedicated publishing programs, community partnerships, and platforms that center the experiences of refugees, diaspora communities, and creators from underrepresented regions and backgrounds.

This includes

  • Publishing programs for refugee and diaspora creators
  • Community partnerships with diaspora organizations
  • Platforms for underrepresented regional voices
  • Multilingual and cross-cultural storytelling initiatives
